West Campus, Hull University
Speedclad worked in close collaboration with Vinci Construction and the University of Hull to ensure that the targets for phased completion and occupation, and the finished quality standards, were achieved on this extensive student residences scheme.
The new West Campus at the university is a £130million scheme developed in partnership between the university and provider of award-winning student accommodation, University Partnerships Programme (UPP). The development houses 1,462 students in single rooms and one-bedroom apartments across 9 blocks. In addition to the accommodation, the scheme also provides numerous supporting facilities such as a café, laundry, store and formal indoor and outdoor areas along an urban avenue. The design, by TP Bennett, complements the scale and context of the wider campus and surrounding buildings, including the Allam Medical Building, another of Speedclad's completed cladding projects.
This was Speedclad's first contract with Vinci Construction, with a value in excess of £4million. We worked in close collaboration with both our client and the university to ensure that the phased completion on the scheme met the stringent deadlines. The initial phase of completed blocks were ready and occupied by students at the start of the 2018 academic year, while construction continued on subsequent phases. Coordination and communication was key to managing the ongoing live works adjacent to the occupied accommodation. Speedclad also worked closely with Vinci in the development and implementation of drone technology to conduct quality inspections of the façade as works progressed.
